I just talked to the engineer. He was able to figure out what happened
with the drives. He used a bus analyzer to do a bus trace with the drive
connected. The analyzer detected the drive and showed that it was in a
degraded format mode (02 31 01). I know you stated the formats were not
interrupted, but there is no other way for this to occur. It is possible
that the format looked to be complete before it was actually finished. If
it were stopped at that point, that would explain the degraded format mode.
Our engineer was able to put the drive on a different model controller
(LSI) and restart the low-level format. The format completed successfully
and the drive is now working properly. If you have access to a different
controller, you can try this as well. If not, you can send the 3 remaining
drives to me and I will have them reformatted for you.
I would also recommend contacting Adaptec about this issue to see if they
can explain why it happened. It does not appear to have been caused by the
drive.
