NASCAR titles to return in 2011

Activision to be the new publisher
For some time, we have been hearing rumblings behind the scenes that a lot of heavy negotiations have been ongoing among a number of parties and NASCAR’s licensing as to the new publisher will be that will again take charge of the future NASCAR video gaming titles. Apparently, the rumors are true that Activision will be the new publisher of a new NASCAR franchise that will arrive in 2011, to be developed by Eutechnyx. It is currently unclear whether Activision is strictly the publisher or holder of the NASCAR video game license, and whether this license is an exclusive or non-exclusive license.

Previously, the NASCAR license was held by Electronic Arts and was a part of the EA Sports family of titles with the release of EA Sports NASCAR 09, at the end of a relationship that started back in 1997. Unconfirmed reports suggested that EA could not come to terms with NASCAR for a new license, which was coupled with reports of sales numbers that had apparently declined. NASCAR was apparently seeking more money and no exclusivity in a new deal; and EA is said to have walked away with the only official comment being that they were not producing a new NASCAR game for 2010, and had no plans for a future NASCAR title at this time.

The new deal will see Eutechnyx develop the new title. The studio might not be familiar with fans of racing titles, but the studio does have experience with racing games, having done racing titles such as SuperCar Challenge, Ferrari Challenge, Ferrari Challenge Deluxe, Big Mutha Truckers, and the popular Test Drive Le Mans (which won a number of awards for the studio). It is also an advantage that the studio has been able to acquire the talents of Ed Martin, formerly of the NASCAR team at EA Sports which has joined Eutechnyx, and who is likely working on the new NASCAR project.

Sources are telling us that we can expect the new NASCAR title to arrive just prior to the 2011 Daytona 500 which will take place on February 20th. While a confirmation of the name of the new title has not been announced, it is believed that it will be called simply NASCAR 11. Word from the shadows is that we should expect an official announcement from Activision along with a trailer soon.
