Konami buries the hatchet with Harmonix

Rock Band plays on
The gaming industry has been waiting to hear the outcome of a particularly nasty patent case that was brewing between Konami and Harmonix.

The claim was that the Rock Band game infringes on Konami's music game patents. For months the press has been filled with sniping and back-biting and it looked like it would only settled in a court of law where a Judge would tell one side to sling its hook.

Now just as suddenly as the case began it has been settled. The case has been settled. The terms of the settlement have not been revealed. All claims and counter-claims have been dropped, and both companies can now continue.

Konami's original claim was that it had two patents on simulated musical instruments, a music-game system and a musical-rhythm matching game, that they came up with in 2002, 2003. Harmonix counter-claimed that the musical instruments in Konami's Rock Revolution infringed on its patents. Somehow it has been all worked out in a truly mysterious way.
